What is a CPDT?

There are about 1500 plus CPDTs (Certified Pet Dog Trainers) in countries including the U.S., Canada, Singapore, Japan, Australia, and the Bahamas.
Dr. Ian Dunbar, along with the organization he started (The Association of Pet Dog Trainers) realized a need for the dog-owning public to have a trustworthy means to gauge a trainer’s knowledge and skills and dog training needed a means to become a legitimate profession. Therefore, in 2001 Dunbar and APDT created The Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers.
A group of internationally known dog training professionals and behaviorists collaborated for 3 years to write a standardized test. Currently, the test covers instruction skills, animal husbandry, ethology, learning theory, and equipment. Applicants for the exam must have 300 hours (at least 225 of those teaching) dog training experience, must have a reference from a veterinarian, colleague, and client, and they must sign a code of ethics. All CPDTs are required to earn continuing education credits or they must take the examination again in 3 years to maintain certification.
Before the Certification Council for Pet Dogs Trainers, there was no certification process for dog trainers. Many schools now teach dog trainers and offer certifications, yet tests may be unmonitored and/or not standardized.
It is important for the dog-owning public to be aware that anyone can call them self a dog trainer and whatever knowledge or skill a trainer has is not regulated or monitored. Choosing a CPDT guarantees a trainer has demonstrable knowledge and will continue education to maintain certification - a good start. The APDT and CCPDT remain pioneers working to promote certification and education as the dog training profession evolves.

Pat Miller Posts Pet Owner's 10 Commandments...

I want to share with you something I heard on Paul Harvey not long ago. It’s entitled, “Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner” as dictated by the pet.1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments. But I have only you.5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you.8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long or my heart might be getting old or weak.9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.10. On the difficult journey, on the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there. Because I love you so.Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful thing without God’s critters. Please pass this on to other pet owners.
